American football - played in UK as an amateur for 10 years:
London Ravens, Luton Flyers, Milton Keynes Pioneers.
Regular lurker/contributor to DejaNews and the PCG.
I was one of the first people to play amateur American Football (in an organised club) in England. It all started with the first regularly televised programmes, introduced by Nicky Horne, in January 1983. I was a young(ish), fit(ish) man, bored with playing Rugby, looking for something new. I found out that the London Ravens were meeting at Hyde Park every Sunday and went to see for myself. I enjoyed the calisthenics, and acquiring new skills. As one of the bigger players (6 ft 2 ins and 250 lbs), I wound up as a Nosetackle in the Defensive Line. After about 6 months, I was extremely fit, and the team members still with us (the hard work shook out the deadwood) went up to Northwich near Manchester, and slaughtered another new team called the Spartans - about 100 points to nil!
Another memorable match was against the Paris Castors, which was drawn 6-6. We also had two matches against Chicksands Air Force Base. In the first one, we restricted them to a 6-0 scoreline, due to our excellent fitness overcoming our lack of experience. But after their analysis from the first game, we were really picked apart 40-0 in the follow-up. These were great days, and I remember them fondly.
